HARMATTAN HAIR CARE!

HARMATTAN!  HARMATTAN! HARMATTAN!

Seen many ladies asking for how to care for their hair during harmattan. Seriously harmattan is clearly no fun, it's really no fun for our natural hair, it's one of those crucial periods of a naturalista,  if you don't up your game, you might just loose all that hair your have been nurturing all this while. This season runs from ending of November right up to march of the following year, this could be a nightmare really, but that can only be if you let it.

Firstly let's understand what harmattan really is, it's a season of cold dry and dusty wind blowing over the west  Africa subcontinent,  this wind blows from the Sahara dessert to the gulf of guinea. Usually the northern areas are the real casualties of this harsh weather.

Now a brief science of natural hair. Natural hair is very curly, it's pattern makes it impossible for the natural oil(sebum) secreted by the scalp to travel right up to the tip. Due to this our strands are left thirsty, and if neglected,  breakage will be the only outcome of such brittleness.

Ok, now we know harmattan is dryness, and we also understand the true dry nature of natural hair, so figure out what will happen to hair that is naturally dry and prone to breakage when it is being exposed to such dry and dusty weather? Yea your guess is as good as mine, BREAKAGE,  will be the result of such exposure.
Well as naturalistas,  we do owe our hair some duty of care, especially during this period, it's the only way we can survive this harsh weather.

HARMATTAN HAIR CARE.

- First thing we need to keep far away from our hair is grease. In fact harmattan or no harmattan grease should not be anywhere near our hair, am bringing this up, because some naturalistas argue that they apply stuffs like blue magic on their hair and like it, well if you are one of those naturalistas,  then this is the time you don't want it near your hair. Sorry to say, but grease does not help in natural hair care, this is petroleum,  and just like any other petroleum based product is bad for hair. What happens is, it acts like a barrier to moisture when applied on hair, no moisture can penetrate your strands when grease is applied. Ever tried applying vaseline on your body then just put a few drops of water in the area? What happens is exactly what happens on your hair, the water just stays there or slides away, it does not penetrative the skin. Also aside preventing moisture from penetrating your hair, grease will act like a magnet to the dust carried along by harmattan. Ever noticed your hair changing colour during harmattan? (If your a grease fan)

- MOISTURE is the key of survival.you want to survive harmattan by experiencing no breakage? Then the only code you need is MOISTURE. Think and practice moisture throughout. When moisturising,  you pay more attention on the ends. The ends are  dry and fragile, therefore needs care, mishandling the ends will only be a disaster, because it will end up being brittle and will fall at every touch, trust me you don't want that for your hair. So when moisturising, be it through the LOC or LCO method, be sure to seal your ends.
I have come with time to believe that we need more than the daily spritz on the mornings of this  weather condition. We need a way to let the hair absorb more moisture, and the best way to do this, is by just letting water run through your hair every morning. Instead of just applying your spritz and  dash out, just let water run through your hair for a couple of minutes,  then do not dry, just use an old t-shirt to wipe off excess dripping water, then let your hair absorb that water for as long as it can, just by letting it air dry, do the LOC/LCO method before it dries out completely. Applying oil and cream when hair is completely dry does not help with moisture. Let your hair moisturiser be water based. Carry your spritz around, get one in a small bottle that can enter your bag, when out, try to take a couple of min and just spritz. Also remember that what you take also help, this is the time to keep yourself Constantly hydrated by drinking a lot of water.

- Protective styling could be a really great idea during this period, but also remember to care for your hair while on protective styling.

- Are you one of those naturalistas that had abandoned the good old hot oil treatment? If you are, then time to reinstate that in your regiment. Hot oil treatments and oil rinses could be a moisturiser booster during this period. If possible  keep your hot oil treatment all through the night. Also this is the perfect timing for GHE (green house effect) actually this will be a great time for placing yourself on the GHE challenge.

- Washing with shampoo should be minimised, say once in 3 weeks,  and Co wash as often as you can. This is a perfect time of just adding some oil in your conditioner, before cowashing.

Lastly, DEEP CONDITIONING, this is Just a "no miss" during harmattan. Some naturalistas could be really lazy when it comes to weekly deep conditioning, but I can assure you this is the time to deep Condition religiously.  A weekly deep conditioning will do the trick.

If your a DIY naturalista,  then your Ingredients should be moisturising, items like palm oil,   ghee, lard, banana, bone marrow, shea butter etc should be primo in your ingredients.

Also, we will be sealing in our deep conditioner, with shea butter, to maximise moisturising effect. This will mean applying shea butter on your hair just after applying your deep conditioner before covering with a plastic bag.

We know harmattan could be draining, but hey!  you have no reasons to be worried, for we got your back here we are with you all the way.

Bless you.

Hair Benefits of Basil Leaves

Most commonly known as “Tulsi” in India, the basil plant is a leafy herb belonging to the mint family. Different varieties of basil are available in large or dwarf forms containing green, purple or variegated leaves. Some of the varieties of basil like Opal basil, lemon basil, anise basil, clove basil and cinnamon basil taste somewhat like their names.
This plant forms an important part of Indian culture. It is quite common in Hindu households where it is worshipped in the morning and evening. The leaves of this plant are edible and are used as flavoring agents due to their rich fragrance. Being one of the most popular herbs in the garden, it is extensively used in Italy in sauces and other dishes and is a key ingredient in Mediterranean food.
The Greek word for basil is ‘king’ which speaks highly of the qualities of this aromatic herb.  Basil plant, particularly the leaves, has great significance for mankind, not only because of its culinary uses but also due to its medicinal properties. Holy basil leaves have been widely used in Ayurveda since thousands of years. This herb is even mentioned in the “Charaka Samhita”, an ancient Ayurvedic text due to its excellent healing properties. In fact, basil leaves or tulsi leaves are considered as a universal cure for numerous diseases and promote longevity and overall well-being.

Basil leaves are equally beneficial for your hair and can help you get rid of a host of hair problems. The benefits of basil leaves for hair care are as follows.

Prevention of Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common problem which can occur due to itchiness and sweatiness of scalp. You can make a paste of basil leaves and add it to your hair oil. Applying this oil on your scalp will keep your scalp cool, reduce itchiness and promote hair growth by improving circulation in your scalp.

Treatment of Grey Hair

For this purpose, soak dried basil leaves powder and amla powder in water overnight and wash your hair with it after straining it the next morning. This prevents graying of hair as well as hair fall.

Strengthen the Hair Shaft

If you are suffering from brittle hair or hair thinning, you can consider basil leaves as they are effective in strengthening the hair shaft.

Rejuvenate Hair Follicles

Basil leaves help in rejuvenating and producing healthy hair by stimulating the hair follicles.

Prevention of Damage by Radiation

Basil leaves have antioxidant properties. They contain the flavonoids, orientin and vicenin that protect the chromosomes and cell structures from oxidation, thus preventing cell ageing and death and providing protection against radiation damage

HOW TO CREATE A HEALTHY HAIR REGIMEN

Hair regimen or Hair routine is simply a way we follow to care for our hair,it's a must have for every natural hair diva with the intention of achieving a healthy natural hair. Hair care regimen doesn't need to be massive or expensive, SIMPLICITY is the key. It's important to know that healthy hair/growth doesn't just happen overnight, its usually as a result of patience and judicious hair care.Below are the guide lines that will help you create a healthy regimen:

A.UNDERSTANDING YOUR HAIR
The number one basic step to creating a regimen is understanding your hair type, Porosity, Density, Elasticity and Texture.

B.CHOOSING THE RITE PRODUCTS
 Carefully choosing your hair care products is of great importance. It is either you go for DIY hair care products or you opt for store bought products. When going for store products, below are certain ingredients you must watch out for and avoid;
-Sodium laurel/Laurly sulfate/SLS/SLES
-Paraben
-Mineral oil
-Petrolatum/Petroluem jelly
-DEA,TEA,MEA
-FD & C color pigments
-Imidazolidinyl Urea
-DMDM Hydantoin
-Chlorine-Silicon
-Paraffin
-Propylene Glycol
-Isopropyl Alcohol

C.WEEKLY WASH
Weekly wash with either shampoo (shamwash) or conditioner(Cowash)

i) Shampoo: Finding a good sulfate free and moisturizing shampoo goes along way to help your hair or you can opt for a DIY shampoo. Washing your hair with shampoo could be done weekly or once in a month depending on your hair type and lifestyle and to this regards, you might want to try alternating it with a cowash.
Examples of store-bought sulfate free shampoos: Creme of Nature argan oil shampoo, Sheamoisture shampoo etc
ii)Instant Conditioner:A paraben free conditioner is best suitable for our natural hair. The instant conditioner can be used as a weekly cowash depending on your hair type and life style while alternating it with a shamwash. Examples of store bought heathy conditioners are crème of nature argan oil conditioner, VO5, Sheamoisture conditioner etc

 D.DEEP CONDITIONING(DC)/DEEP TREATMENT(DT)
Deep Conditioning Treatment comes in after hair wash on damp hair. DC like a life giver to the hair, supporting the hair system while it replenishes and puts moist back into the hair because our natural hair is ordinarily prone to dryness. Deep conditioning strengthens the hair roots, makes our hair more manageable, prevents breakage, split ends, dandruff, itchy scalp and dullness of hair. Its absolutely one treatment no hair should overlook.

TYPES OF DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS:
i)Moisturizing dc(weekly basis)
ii)Protein dc(once in month)
iii)Hydrolysed Protein dc(for transitioning and high porosity high hair types-Twice or once a month..Hydrolysed Protein dc recipes will be coming up soon)
iv)Hard protein dc
v)Hot oil treatment(A must do for all hair types,atleast 2x a month)
D.LEAVE-IN CONDITIONERS
Leave-in conditioners plays an important role in keeping the hair intact after treatments as well as on daily basis. Enriching your hair after a deep treatment with leave-in conditioner is a considerably factor, however its important you go for a good leave-in conditioner that is more of water/liquid based and to this regards, you will need to make do with a sealer oil(like castor oil, olive oil) or cream(like shea or cocobutter) to help seal in the moist and futher protects ur hair from drying out.Leave-in conditioners is a daily affair especially the spritz and no regimen or hair care is complete without it.
Note;Leave-in conditioners as the name implies is never to be rinsed or wash out after application.

E.PROTECTIVE STYLING:
When going for protective stlyes, ensure you make do with what your hair/scalp would be comfortable with. If you feel pains or servere pressure on your scalp in the course of making your PS, pls do not proceed further. The hair follicles weakens when excess pressure is put on it which often times results in severe hair breakage and traction alopecia in most cases. Above all, ensure your hair is treated right while on PS and a long time wear of PS is not advised.Avoid an excess manipulation/combing of your hair(Very important) and avoid combing hair when dry.

F.NIGHT TIME HAIR CARE
Ensure you properly moisturize your hair and cover with a gud silk or stain scarf before going bed or better still sleep on a satin/silk pillow case. Also in the morning when you wake up, gently massage your scalp for atleast 2mins

A MUST HAVE HAIR CARE TOOLS:
1.Widetooth comb
2.Spray bottle
3.Plastic Cap/nylon bag
4.Measuring spoons
5.Mini bowel for ur DC mix
6.Satin/silk/bonnet cap
7.Soft clean towel or clean old T-shirt

Did you know there are salons popping up, that are mixing up fresh foods as hair treatments?! It’s so fun to see people willing to pay money for a DIY treatment. We’re appreciating what nature can do, moving away from thinking that it needs to come in a bottle to be any good.

  • The strawberries give you Vit C to help your body absorb the iron

How to Care for Your Gray African-American Hair Type

Many people are under the impression that Black hair has different elements than non-Black hair. Actually, the components of all hair types are essentially the same; it is in the way the elements of the hair are structured that result in the differences in texture. Often, the outer layer of the hair, called the cuticle, can be twice as thick for Black hair as it is for other types of hair. Black hair also tends to be drier because it is more difficult for the natural oil secretions to effectively penetrate the more tightly-curled hair. Gray hair is also in general, more resistant to coloring and chemical treatments than other hair colours.

Things You'll Need

Deep Conditioner
Shampoo especially designed for Grey hair
Hair colour especially designed for Hrey hair( if desired)
Hair oils, gels or pomade especially designed for black hair
Hot oil Treatment kit
Hair combs and brushes especially designed for black hair
Spray bottle for misting hair
Save scarf or pillowcase for protecting hair during sleep

Step 1
Decide whether you choose to wear your hair in a natural or relaxed style. Decide whether you will let your hair “go gray” or color it hair to conceal your gray. Select your hair care products based on your decision for hairstyle and color preference.

Step 2
Wash your hair no more than once a week, gently massaging your scalp. Carefully blot out excess water with a towel. Apply a leave-in deep conditioner.

Step 3
Have your hair professionally cut at least every six weeks. If desired, color your hair with a haircolor preparation made especially to cover gray. Use a hair moisturizing lotion, or Amaze shea butter-type oil daily.

Tips & Warnings

African-American hair tends to be more fragile than other types; therefore, take special care when combing and brushing your hair.
Using a special shampoo designed for graying hair will help alleviate a yellow tinge in your hair.
De-tangle your hair with upward instead of downward strokes.
Good nutritional habits will help to keep your gray hair healthy.
Gently mist your hair and scalp with a spray bottle in between shampooing especially if you sweat a lot or particular in sports and exercise.
Tie or cover your hair with a satin scarf or cap every night to protect it from excessive breakage.
If you decide to both chemically relax your hair and color it, relax it first.
Take care in the selection of a hair color when covering your gray hair; try not change your natural color no more than two shades lighter or darker.
Take particular cautions in keeping your gray hair moisturized with products specifically for Black hair types.
Gray hair in African-Americans tends to dry out and break off more easily; choose your hairstyle accordingly.

Cheers!

I AM A VERY PROUD and GIFTED EMPRESS QUEEN- I am The BLACK RAPUNZEL!

I was born in the twin Island of Trinidad & Tobago. I migrated to the U.S about
29 yrs ago and is a U.S citizen.I am married with a 12yr old named Zion.

Asha Mandela has what you might call a head-turning head of hair. The 50-year-old mother from Atlanta has been called the “black Rapunzel” for her 55-foot dreadlocks, the world’s longest.
"My hair has become part of me. It is my life. I will never cut it," Mandell said, adding that she maintained her locks even while undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. The tattooed, bejeweled mother of one has also overcome two strokes and two heart attacks.
But her roughly 39 pounds of hair have also affected her spine. "The doctors seem to think I have a curvature of my spine and that it's the length and the weight of my hair that's making me curve,” she said. "Some have said my neck has collapsed at the back and that I need to be careful because I could start having spasms in my spine and probably be paralyzed."
Still, Mandela wants to keep growing her hair. "Cutting it would be equivalent to suicide. It would be like being a zombie." She says her locks have helped her love life. "My hair has never caused a problem with intimacy. I think it adds a little spice on top," she added.

In 2009, Mandela made headlines when she earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest dreadlocks. At the time, they measured 19 feet, 6 inches long – but one strand of hair measured 55 feet, 7 inches – nearly three times the official length. Washing her dreadlocks also proves to be a challenge. “I wash my hair once a week,” she said. It can take up to two days for the strands to dry.
“When I first started, it was more of a spiritual journey. It wasn’t anything to do with a fad or style in fashion,” Mandela said. “After 25 years of growth, my hair has really become part of me and I feel that if I ever cut my hair I’d really be taking away my life.”

Are you up for the challenge with your hair?
Cheers!

Hair benefits of Tangerine

Vitamin A Helps to Moisturize the Sebum in the Scalp:

One of the most important vitamins for health is vitamin A. Its antioxidant properties work to condition and moisturize the sebum in the scalp. Antioxidants also fight against pollution that weighs down your hair and makes it weaker.
Promotes Hair Growth & Delays Hair Greying:
Vitamin B12 reduces hair loss, promotes hair growth and slows down the greying process.
Source of Healthy & Shiny Hair:
As mentioned earlier, vitamin C helps to build collagen which is crucial for hair growth. Vitamin C also assists in breaking down iron, another source for healthy hair, so that your body can absorb it. You can apply tangerine juice with your hair oil to get a healthy and shiny hair.

Storage tips

While selecting tangerines, always look for the heavy one. More weight equals more juice. Store them in the fridge to retain their freshness. If you buy too many tangerines at a one go, rinse them off in cold water and dry them well with a piece of cotton clothes and store them in the fridge. Tangerine belongs to a special and rare class of fruits that can be eaten everyday due to its low calorie count and high vitamin content.
So have you taken a Tangerine today?

Simple Tricks To Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Do you envy Rapunzel?
Such long and lustrous hair. It is dream that most have and it is not unachievable.
Whether you are suffering from hair growth problems or envious of the long and shiny locks of your favourite movie star or want to get out of a disastrous haircut, we have the best solutions for all these hair issues!

The Science Behind Hair Growth

1. An average human has 1,00,000 hair follicles, each of which produce 20 hairs in a lifetime.
2. Each of our hair strands undergoes 3 stages: Anagen phase, Catagen phase and Telogen phase.
About 90% of the hair on your scalp now is in the growth phase or the Anagen phase which usually takes around 5 years.
During the Catagen phase, the hair follicle shrinks. This happens to 1% of hair strands and takes about a month’s time.
And finally in the Telogen phase, the hair rests or falls off. This happens to around 10 – 15% of the hair strands and this period last up to 5 months.
3. The rate of hair growth varies from person to person, but the average rate is about 15 centimetres or 6 inches per year.

4. Each hair strand completes its cycle and wears off. A person loses about 50 to 100 of hair strands per day. On the day when you wash your hair, you end up losing up to 250 strands. But if you lose more than this range, you suffer from severe hair fall problem and should consult a dermatologist.

Causes Behind Hair Fall
Genetics: Genetics is one of the major causes of hair fall. Studies show that 60% of the people inherit the problem of acute hair fall. And sadly there are no treatments to cure hair fall caused by heredity. However you can take care of your mane to delay the process and make it healthy and shiny.
Improper Diet: A healthy diet is very important not only for our body, but also for skin and hair. Our scalp cells needs proper nourishment and nutrition. People who follow low protein diet can suffer protein deficiency which leads to massive amount of hair shedding. Deficiency of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients can cause hair fall and thinning of hair.
Prolong Diseases: Hair loss caused due to diseases or illness is mostly temporary. It is cured once the body returns to good health. Typhoid, flu, fungus infection on the scalp (ringworm) etc causes hair fall.
Thyroid imbalance is another condition which leads to temporary hair fall, as both underactive and over active thyroid glands is responsible for hair loss. However it can easily be cured by proper medication from the physician.
Stress: Our present day lifestyle has long working hours and a hectic schedule and stress is the subversive effect. Our scalp cells, like other body cells, need relaxation and rejuvenation. Therefore practice yoga and meditation to reduce the effects of stress and thus reduce hair fall.
Cosmetics: Use of chemical laden cosmetics causes severe hair fall. These chemicals clog your scalp pores by forming a layer over it. Most of the shampoos and conditioners contain harsh chemicals which have adverse effects on your hair. Avoid using them and switch to natural products, you can use a mixture of amla, reetha and shikakai to wash your hair. A hair pack of honey and eggs can be used as a natural conditioner.
There are also some mechanical reasons also which cause hair fall like excessive combing, hair styling (like dye, bleach, perming), tight braids etc. are.

How To Grow Hair Faster

Check What You Eat: It has already been discussed that diet plays an important role for the growth of healthy and lustrous hair. It is very important that you nourish them from outside as well as inside.
A well balanced diet for healthy skin and hair should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables and should be followed religiously. Include nutrients such as Vitamin B12, zinc, iron and calcium as they prevent hair loss. You know that our hair is composed of “keratin”- a protein, so have a protein rich diet which consists of soybean, cheese, milk, fish, chicken etc. Stay away from that junk and processed food as it inhibits hair growth. So what you eat is the answer to how to increase hair growth.
Dietary Supplements: To regulate the growth of the hair1naturally, include dietary supplements such as bio vitamins, multivitamins and omega 3 fatty acids. They are also found in green leafy vegetables, cereals, peas, fish, beans, almonds, yoghurt etc. However before taking any supplements in the form of tablets or capsules, consult your physician as some people may be allergic to them.
Here is a list of essential vitamins for hair growth that will help answer the question of how to improve hair growth.
Drink More Water: Do you know that our hair consists of 95 % protein and 5 % water? Therefore it is important that you should drink 10-12 glasses of water daily, to keep your grow hair faster and keep it nourished and healthy.
Regular exercise: Regular exercise not only keeps our body healthy but also encourages hair growth. 20 minutes of regular exercise such as yoga, meditation, walking, jogging, dancing, cycling etc improves blood circulation and helps the nutrients to penetrate into our scalp.
Proper Sleep: Do not forget to include 8 hours of sleep in your daily routine. Lack of sleep causes hair fall, dark circles, pigmentation, dull skin and a stressful mind. A peaceful sleep is important for healthy mind and body. Try to sleep on silk pillowcase as it will be soft on your hair by causing less friction.
Regular Trimming: Split ends are one of the major reasons which inhibit hair growth. If your hair is dry and damaged, then you are bound to have split ends. Trim your hair every 3 months to get rid of split ends and encourage hair growth. Remember – never prick your split ends as it would further aggravate your problem.
Cleansing: Wash your hair regularly to keep it clean and healthy. The sebum produced by the oil glands form a layer over the scalp and inhibits the growth of hair. Do not use chemical laden products, instead opt for natural shampoos and conditioners. But frequent shampooing is also harmful as it will make it dry, stripped and prone to breakage. Wash your hair twice a week to keep it squeaky clean and healthy.
Hot oil Massages: Nothing can be more soothing than a hot oil massage with your favourite aromatic oils. Oil massage improves blood circulation to the roots of your hair and encourages hair growth. You can use various oils such as coconut, almond, olive, and jojoba or rosemary oil for regular massages. Use a towel dipped in hot water to cover your hair after the massage as it helps in penetrating the oil into your scalp opening the pores.

Avoid Doing These:

Hair Colour: Most of the hair colors contain ammonia, which is an industrial bleaching agent. It can play havoc on your hair by making it dry and damaged. Excessive use of hair colors can lead to hair fall by damaging the hair follicles. Instead of chemicals try natural options like henna. It colors as well as conditions your hair making it soft, smooth and healthy hair. You can also use coffee or cinnamon powder.
Hair Treatment: Every other day we fancy different hair styles, sometimes straight, perm or wavy. But do you know that these hair treatments use a lot of harsh chemicals which lead to severe hair fall? Regular hair straightening also leads to split ends, and once it starts splitting, you have to continuously chop them to let your hair grow. Try to avoid them as much as possible and start loving your natural tresses.
Do Not Brush Your Wet Hair: This is the one of the biggest mistakes people generally make – combing or brushing their hair while it’s still wet. Never do this. Wait for your hair to dry naturally, gently detangle and then comb softly.
Avoid Hot Water: Do not use hot water while rinsing your hair. It makes your hair very dry and brittle. Always use cool water as it allows the cuticle to smooth out and lie flat, thus giving you soft and manageable hair.
Tight Hairstyles And Rubber Bands: When you tie your hair into a tight ponytail or braid, the hair gets pulled from the roots and gets stressed. This makes them loose from the roots and thus, more prone to breakage. It makes the hair weak and causes permanent damage. Rubber bands also pull the hair out from the roots causing extensive damage to the mane. The hair becomes weak and hurts the scalp.
