Asha Mandela has what you might call a head-turning head of hair. The 50-year-old mother from Atlanta has been called the “black Rapunzel” for her 55-foot dreadlocks, the world’s longest.

"My hair has become part of me. It is my life. I will never cut it," Mandell said, adding that she maintained her locks even while undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. The tattooed, bejeweled mother of one has also overcome two strokes and two heart attacks.

But her roughly 39 pounds of hair have also affected her spine. "The doctors seem to think I have a curvature of my spine and that it's the length and the weight of my hair that's making me curve,” she said. "Some have said my neck has collapsed at the back and that I need to be careful because I could start having spasms in my spine and probably be paralyzed."

Still, Mandela wants to keep growing her hair. "Cutting it would be equivalent to suicide. It would be like being a zombie." She says her locks have helped her love life. "My hair has never caused a problem with intimacy. I think it adds a little spice on top," she added.

In 2009, Mandela made headlines when she earned an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest dreadlocks. At the time, they measured 19 feet, 6 inches long – but one strand of hair measured 55 feet, 7 inches – nearly three times the official length. Washing her dreadlocks also proves to be a challenge. “I wash my hair once a week,” she said. It can take up to two days for the strands to dry.

“When I first started, it was more of a spiritual journey. It wasn’t anything to do with a fad or style in fashion,” Mandela said. “After 25 years of growth, my hair has really become part of me and I feel that if I ever cut my hair I’d really be taking away my life.”

How to Make a Dutch Braid

The Dutch braid is a hairstyle that looks difficult to create but is fairly simple. It is basically an in-side-out or reverse French braids; you simply braid strands under rather than over each other. If you have mastered the French braid and want to try something new, try these steps for a simple Dutch braid.

Prepare your hair. You can use damp or dry hair for a Dutch braid, but make sure that it is well brushed. Remove all tangles, and if you have many fly-away hairs use a spray bottle to slightly dampen it with water.

 

If you want your hair to be wavy/curly when you remove it from the braid, use wet hair to start.

Brush your hair straight back so that there is no part. If you want to create 2 or more braids, part your hair on the top into separate sections.

If you don't intend on braiding your bangs, brush them to the side at this point.

Gather your hair. Grab a piece of hair from the top of your head. If you want to include your bangs, start this section directly above your forehead. Otherwise, pick up a section from the very top of your head. Gather a piece ranging from 3–5 inches (7.6–12.7 cm) wide, and 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.

Cross the right strand under the center strand.

 

Cross the left strand under the center strand.

Repeat the pattern and cross the right strand, then the left strand, under the center strand.

Cross the right strand under the center, and pick up another small section from the right side of your head.

 

Cross the left strand under the center, and pick up another small section from the left side of your head.

 

Add more hair to your braid by picking up small strands every time you cross pieces under the center strand.

Continue the dutch braid to the nape of your neck.

Finish your braid with a regular braid (going under rather than over) when you run out of hair to add.

Tie off your braid with an elastic band and give a light misting of hair spray.

Finish!

Christmas Tree Pattern Hairstyle!

This time of year is full of holiday parties and get-togethers to go to, and we’re always looking for easy and beautiful looks to try! We always love the tutorials from Princess Hair Styles and this one is no exception! With just a few little hair ties, you end up with an elegant, Renaissance-look hairstyle with your little hair ties in the pattern of a Christmas tree! You can use coloured hair ties to create the Christmas tree pattern, and you can even put little clips and decorations in your hair to look like Christmas ornaments!

This is a multi-purpose style that can go subtle and elegant or festive, fun, and over-the-top! It’s a really simple process. You start with a small amount of hair tied back right on top of your head for the beginning of the Christmas tree hair net. You pull two small amounts of hair from either side of your head, split the existing ponytail into two, and tie both in hair ties. So for the second row you have two hair ties. For the third row, you split the two existing pony tails in half, tie the middle half together with a hair tie, and pull two more small pieces of hair from either side of your hair to join with the remaining hair from both ponytails. So for the third row you have three hair ties. Continue the process until you have as many hair ties as you want in your hair, and voila!
