What Kinds of Vegetables & Fruits Are Good for the Hair?

Veggies and fruits are natural sources of essential hair nutrients.

Even a great haircut and expensive products can't mask a head of unhealthy hair. Rich, shiny and strong hair is a result of feeding your body the right nutrients and giving it plenty of water. Most fast foods don't provide the necessary nutrients, and there aren't any shortcuts to healthy hair. But delicious fruits and vegetables provide your body with essential nutrients that not only improve your hair health and growth, but contribute to your overall energy and wellness.

Dark Orange and Yellow
Sweet potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, yellow apples, pineapples, cantaloupes, nectarines, yellow tomatoes and other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables are full of beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A in your body. Sufficient vitamin A helps produce oils essential to a healthy scalp. When your body is lacking enough vitamin A, itchiness and dandruff can appear.
Citrus Fruits
According to our last post on the benefits of Citrus fruit;
It is One of the best ways to ensure healthy hair is to get enough vitamin C. And one of the best ways to ensure you get enough vitamin C is to eat plenty of citrus fruits. Vitamin C is a major antioxidant that is essential to the production of skin collagen and helps protect fat-soluble vitamins A and E from free radicals. Oranges, limes, grapefruits and lemons are good sources of vitamin C. Include plenty of these vital fruits in your diet, since vitamin C is easily lost during food preparation when exposed to air, cooking and submersion in water. Rubbing fresh lemon juice into the scalp is a method used to eliminate dandruff and help scalp circulation.
Berries
These super fruits are hard to beat when it comes to nutrient power for healthy hair. They are packed with vitamin C, which supports small blood vessels that feed hair follicles and are essential to scalp circulation. Loganberries, boysenberries, gooseberries, raspberries and strawberries are also rich in vitamin B, which gives the cells plenty of oxygen and is known to help reduce hair loss, slow the graying process, stimulate hair growth and contribute to shiny hair.
Dark Green Vegetables
Leafy greens are packed with nutrients and disease-fighters known as phytochemicals. They also contain a very high percentage of water, which helps keep your hair, as well as your skin, hydrated. Without proper body hydration, your skin and hair begin to look dry. These dark greens, high in vitamin A, not only help condition and create healthy scalp oils, but also contain antioxidants that fight free radicals from pollution, helping to strengthen and thicken hair so you experience less breakage.
Avocados
Avocados are in a class by themselves when it comes to maintaining healthy hair. While some people argue the avocado is a fruit and others insist it's a vegetable, no one argues about the benefits of this powerhouse when it comes to hair health. They are rich in beta-carotene, vitamin B and C, which are essential for hair growth, and vitamin E that ensures cells get the oxygen they need and strengthens capillary walls, promoting good scalp circulation. Avocados' high-fat content also makes them an excellent choice as a hair conditioner. Thoroughly mash a ripe avocado and apply it to your damp hair after shampooing. Leave it in your hair for 10 to 15 minutes, then thoroughly rinse and dry as usual.
